The National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme is an Aerospace Technology Institute programme with  funding in place and the ambition to progress  innovative aerospace technologies. Launched in 2013, this unique mentoring and supportive approach helps SMEs, with little or no experience of Government grants, navigate the funding application and project fulfilment processes. Through this approach SMEs are more likely to succeed.

The NATEP 3 programme, which is now in operation, is a UK Wide initiative led by a consortium partnership of ADS and Farnborough Aerospace Consortium.

The programme will support companies in the aerospace supply chain to develop innovative technologies, working in collaboration with others and supported by higher tier companies. It will equip them to win new business with existing customers and to diversify their customer base. It is based on a proven model delivered by the partner organisations since 2013. As well as grant funding, the programme provides high calibre technical and management resource to help those companies accelerate the technology development towards market readiness.

It is an industry-led programme.  Panels of aerospace industry professionals and technology advisers throughout the English regions, Northern Ireland and Scotland are contributing their time for free to support the projects. New and innovative product technologies already supported by NATEP will find applications on current and future aircraft platforms. New or improved manufacturing process technologies will enhance the productivity and competitiveness of the UK aerospace manufacturing sector as well as finding applications in other industry sectors such as Energy, Automotive or Rail.

Harriet Wollerton, NATEP Programme Director comments
"NATEP is a success and represents a tremendous opportunity, particularly for small and medium sized companies. The programme, running since 2013, has shown that it is sized and arranged to suit the needs of small supply chain companies and projects. The mentoring and support provided by NATEP helps the planning and execution of the projects and has produced many exciting and innovative products, materials and manufacturing processes that will help anchor manufacturing and high value jobs in the UK, improve productivity and competitiveness in the sector and create export opportunities. The new funding from the Aerospace Technology Institute will take the programme to 2023 and can be further built upon”

Rolls Royce, Airbus, Bombardier, GKN and Leonardo, are sponsoring the programme, ensuring that everyone from the top level of the industry down is working together, towards the same goal.

NATEP 1 & 2

National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme (NATEP) is an Aerospace Growth Partnership (AGP) programme designed to:
  • Allow development of products and manufacturing technologies at lower levels of the supply chain;
  • Encourage supply chain partnerships with customer participation;
  • Support R&D management in the supply chain;
  • Focus on middle TRLs;

The objective of this programme is to support the maturing of 100 undeveloped aerospace technologies in the UK aerospace supply chain between 2013 and 2017, thereby creating or retaining as many as 1200 jobs.

NATEP is a £40m programme jointly funded by industry and government. Government has pledged £23m from it’s Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) which is being managed by Birmingham City Council.  Industry partners include – Airbus, Bombardier, GKN Aerospace, Rolls-Royce and Spirit Aerosystems.  This is a National programme managed by ADS and rolled out by Regional Aerospace Alliances.

Minister Michael Fallon comments: According to Business Minister Michael Fallon: “We have a world-leading aerospace sector underscored by our ability to excel in areas like research & development. It’s this commitment to innovation through our Aerospace Industrial Strategy that will be a crucial driver for long-term growth.

“If we are to get ahead of the game we must create the right conditions now that incentivise businesses to invest in the UK and develop new, exciting products. This new funding will help to do just that and also ensure a high level of quality projects receive the support they need to get off the ground.

“The National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme (NATEP) is positive news for UK aerospace, and a further demonstration of Government and industry working together to strengthen our supply chains.”
