Objectives of Group:

The Space Industry enables global communications, broadcasting, satellite navigation, weather forecasting, climate monitoring and a host of other key services.

The UK Space Industry continues to grow faster than the UK economy as a whole. With turnover of around £6 billion and productivity per employee more than four times the UK average, the Space Industry makes a significant contribution to the UK economy. The industry has high levels of capital and R&D investment and a highly skilled workforce in both Space Prime Contractors and SMEs.

Background to Sector Group:

In November 2008, agreement was reached to establish a European Space Agency facility at Harwell in the UK. This initiative will provide a further boost to an already high growth sector. The focus at this facility will be on robotics, climate change/climate monitoring and Integrated Applications which will not only create opportunities within the Space sector, but in related industry sectors.

SEEDA has confirmed that SCENS, the Knowledge Network for Space will be launched following a successful pilot phase in 2008. This will create opportunities for Academia and Industry to collaborate on R&D opportunities both in the UK and with our European and international colleagues. Now is the time to develop the technology for the solutions for tomorrow.

FAC and SCENS are working with the other UK Regional Development Agencies and with National, European and International organisations to bring real benefits to members.

Space, perhaps more than any other sector is a global business. FAC welcomes members with an interest in the Space sector wherever they are located. With new strategic partnership developing across Europe and internationally, Members of FAC and the SEEDA Knowledge Network will be optimally placed to take advantage of these new opportunities.
